Why should I become a member of WLA?
The WLA is organized to benefit only prominent and experienced women lawyers both in and outside the USA. Women lawyers in private practice are often presented with unique challenges and opportunities and the WLA is designed to support women and women only.
The WLA offers its members the ability to easily refer work to each other and encourage reciprocal referrals. Also, through periodic webinars, meetings, forums and one-on-one assistance, the WLA actively reaches out and is a source of support to its members. There is no other organization for women in private practice that is structured to fulfill all of these objectives.
Why is the WLA for women only?
Women lawyers have unique issues that differ from male lawyers and there is no other organization that deals with these issues in both a referral and support manner.
How does the WLA differ from other referral networks like Lex Mundi, Terra Lex, etc.?
WLA differs in a number of respects. The law firm itself is a member of most referral network organizations versus individual lawyers in the WLA. Also, the WLA has both experience and Martindale-Hubbell rating requirements to become members. In addition, a goal of the WLA is to provide training and support to members regarding business development. Of course, the WLA is for women only.
Why does the WLA require a lawyer to have seven years experience in private practice or be a partner in their firm?
The WLA is designed to be an organization for accomplished, prominent lawyers only. We believe this approach enhances referral capabilities and provides a tighter focus on business development training issues.
Why must members be AV or BV rated or recommended by an existing member to join the WLA?
Please see question 4.
If my firm is a member of a another referral organization can I still join the WLA?
Yes. The WLA serves individual lawyers versus law firms, and we provide benefits, such as business development training and support to members.
Are there any requirements for members once admitted to the WLA?
Once a member has been accepted into the WLA, a Member Confirmation Notification will be sent to her. The confirmation will address various operational policies and guidelines of the WLA including the need to notify the WLA of any referrals received from another member.
What are the membership fees and expenses to join the WLA?
Current annual dues are $295.00 U.S. Dollars. Other optional expenses are for personal business development coaching and the annual meeting. The WLA commits to keeping optional expenses at a reasonable level.
Can the database of members be used to communicate with other members?
Yes, we expect that to occur. It should be noted, however, that there is a prohibition against solicitation and advertising to other members.
Can there be more than one member per firm?
Yes, for most law firms that will be the case since these are individual memberships and the benefits of the WLA are tailored to individuals.
Can law firms become corporate members of the WLA?
Law firms can become sponsors but not members of the WLA.
Can other attorneys in my firm use the password protected area of the WLA website?
No. The password protected area is for paying members use only.
Does the WLA membership stay with me if I join another law firm?
Yes, as long as you are still in the private practice of law.
